Younès Belhanda was born on 25 February 1990 in Avignon (France).

Belhanda’s career as a footballer began in 1997 when he joined the youth team of RC Aramonais. At the age of 13, Belhanda was scouted by the likes of Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier and St Etienne. After discussing the move with his parents, Belhanda decided that he should join Montpellier in order to remain close to home.

Towards the end of the 2007/2008 season, (after spending several years developing in the youth system) Belhanda was promoted to the club's reserve team, which was playing in the Championnat de France amateur (the fourth level of French football).

In the following season, he played both on the reserve team and with the club's under-19 team in the Coupe Gambardella, the national youth cup competition in France. In the latter competition, Montpellier won the title only for the second time in it's history. Belhanda appeared in all six matches the team contested. In the final, he played the entire match as Montpellier defeated Nantes 2-0.

27th July 2009 - As a result of the under-19 team's cup success, several of the members of the squad were awarded professional contracts including Belhanda, on which he agreed to a three-year deal.

Subsequently, Belhanda was then promoted to the senior team by new incoming manager Rene Girard. Despite being brought up under a defensive mentality, Girard preferred to utilize Belhanda as an attacker by using him as a left-winger.

In August 2009 Belhanda made his professional debut in the team's opening league match of the 2009/2010 season against Paris Saint-Germain, in which the match ended 1-1.

Younes Belhandamade his Moroccan debut in November 2010, one month after making a “choice of the heart” to play for his motherland instead of France. His impact was immediate. “You’d have thought he’d been playing international football for years”, said Morocco coach Gerets. “His desire to get on the ball combined with excellent technique means he can play through the middle or on the wings. He reminds me of Robert Pires,” noted his coach at the time, Rene Girard.

19th August 2010 - Belhanda signed a two-year contract extension with Montpellier until 2014.

Belhanda in his best 2011/12 season so far, was changed position into the playmaker role just behind the striker. The move was ultimately a success as Belhanda opened the campaign scoring two goals in his first three matches in wins over Auxerre and Rennes.

The following season Montpelier became Coupe de la Ligue runners up. Belhanda made 42 appearances and scored 3 goals.

With no doubt 2011/12 season was the best one for Belhanda. First of all he started playing as a playmaker. Younes scored 2 goals in 3 first games of the season.

In November of 2011 he became Ligue 1 Player of the Month and in May of 2012 Montpellier won the national championship.

“Belhanda has a good speed and dribble”, - estimated Belhanda ex-Montpellier head coach Rene Girard. “He is a very gifted playmaker who is able to turn the tide of any match” – stated FC Arsenal London manager Arsene Wenger. “It was a great season for Montpellier. Belhanda and Giroud were incredible” – said Real Madrid sporting director Zinedine Zidane.

In 2011/12 season Belhanda became Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year.

As Olivier Giroud signed a contract with Arsenal London, Montpellier started demonstrating less impressive football. Inter Milan, Tottenham Hotspur and Besiktas wanted to sign Belhanda, but their attempts were vain.

Eventually FC Dynamo Kyiv president Ihor Surkis managed to persuade Younes to move to Kyiv. Belhanda is sure that he has made the right choice. “I’m happy to have signed a contract with Dynamo. It is a great team I want to play for. I have a strong desire to win the Ukrainian Premier League and to demonstrate a good play in Europa League”.
